OVERVIEW

Perhappiness was originally commissioned for 50,000 Beds, a group exhibition that took place in 2007 at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Real Art Ways, and Artspace in Connecticut. 45 artists made video works in hotel and motel rooms around the state. The work was then exhibited in an unconventional exhibition format, curated and designed by Chris Doyle.

I was handed my dossier at the car rental place in New York City, and as instructed, I drove up to Mystic, Connecticut. Registered at the front desk; told them I wouldn't stay the night. It was a business hotel chain for middle-level sorts, one of any. I took the elevator up, slid my key card in the slot, entered the room, closed the door, and stripped down to my underwear. Laid my equipment out. Like a forensic specialist, I proceeded to document the room. Only later, back at my work station did I act more like a psychic, seeking to tease out the spectres and residual dreams that may have been left by prior inhabitants.
